The Australian Centre for Asian Business at the University of South Australia has been appointed by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) to conduct a range of information and training workshops to assist small business to understand and explore business opportunities with China as a result of the recently signed Free Trade Agreement between China and Australia (ChAFTA).

Exporting to China for Small Businesses
Exporting to China is not just for large corporations. Small businesses with the right strategic business plan can successfully harness the opportunities and manage the challenges and risks that China presents. Developing business engagement with the Chinese importers requires practical insights into the critical success factors, entry point tactics, managing key relationships, an understanding of the regulatory environment, accessing investment and export subsidies, and how to leverage the benefits of the recent China Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA).

ChAFTA entered into force on 20 December 2015 and many export and supply opportunities are being phased-in over a number of years. The agreement creates opportunities for a wide range of South Australian small businesses. Industries that will benefit most from it include:

• Manufacturers
• Food processors
• Beef, dairy, sheep, pork, live animals, hides, skins and leather
• Horticulture, wine and seafood
• Legal, financial and professional services
• Aged care and health care

Over the next few years, there will be growing opportunities for South Australian small businesses to develop export markets with China and become part of a global supply chain. Research shows that small businesses that export are more efficient and productive, more profitable, more innovative, achieve greater economies of scale, and are able to spread business risk. The benefits for small businesses grow the longer they export and the more they export.
