You may be aware of the South Australian Government’s commitment to create opportunities for families to retain shacks on Crown land and in national parks.

Over the past year, significant work and consultation has been undertaken by the Department for Environment and Water with key stakeholders (including shack owners associations, local councils and government agencies) to understand the shacks context, including the current regulatory requirements as well as contemporary safety, amenity and environmental standards.

This has culminated in an extensive review of the actions required to achieve a clear framework and process going forward to retain shacks on Crown land and in national parks.

A Preliminary Discussion Paper is now available to provide details regarding the findings to date and actions being undertaken to enable greater certainty of tenure for shacks on Crown land and in national parks, including:

• the current legal barriers to enabling greater certainty of tenure and the processes underway to address them
• other regulatory requirements and considerations to enable the retention of shacks in return for meeting contemporary safety, amenity and environmental standards.

Your feedback is sought on elements of the Preliminary Discussion Paper and the Bill.  Have your say by completing the online survey by 5 pm Monday 15 July 2019.
