RDAWEP Indigenous Economic Development Manager Howard was one of about 30 local legends selected to be part of history, joining thousands of others from the Commonwealth, in taking more than a million steps to bring the Baton to its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Starting on 13 March 2017 at Buckingham Palace, the Baton travels on an epic 388-day journey through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

The Eyre Peninsula relay journey began at the Coffin Bay entrance and was carried to the boat ramp, before journeying on an oyster barge to the Coffin Bay Jetty. The Port Lincoln journey began at the marina and made its way through Port Lincoln to the foreshore.

The Queen’s Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

Howard said it was a proud and humbling experience to take part in the relay.

“It was a very proud moment, I still connect with athletics and to be part of the baton relay that also promoted Eyre Peninsula was indeed an honour, I have also been contacted by a baton bearer from another part of the state which was also humbling,” Howard said.
